My DIY - Cutting Board Turned into Chalkboard

I've seen a lot of Chalkboards on Pinterest and decided I wanted to make my own.

I went to Hobby Lobby to purchase the Chalkboard Spray Paint with my 40% Off Coupon making it only $4.80 instead of $8.  If you didn't already know, Hobby Lobby ALWAYS has 40% Off any single regular price item, you can find it online here.

I decided I just wanted to use an old wood cutting board and spray paint the middle.  I taped off the sides and got to work.  The Chalkboard paint was really runny, so it made it difficult to spray paint the surface evenly.  I would recommend using the regular chalkboard paint instead of spray paint, I think they have that at Hobby Lobby too.

I purchased a box of different colors of chalk from CVS for $4.

Here's how it turned out:  Unfortunately I drew a cupcake on it the week before and it really wouldn't erase :(  I wonder what I could use to remove the chalk better, any suggestions??

What do you think of this project?  Have you used Chalkboard paint before?

  1. My husband painted one of the inset panels of my pantry door with chalkboard paint. He did not enjoy it, not even remotely. I bought a felt eraser (an old school one, not one that can double as a white board eraser), and I occasionally wipe it down with a wet paper towel just to get everything off.

  2. Did you 'prime' the chalkboard before writing on it the first time?
They recommend rubbing the side of the chalk all over the surface the chalkboard, then wiping it off. This stops permanent marks from happening.
Maybe you can do this the next time around! :)

  4. I want to chalkboard up the entire house but since I'm renting, I'll need to come up with a less permanent idea than doing the walls. Your project turned out great! Esther Norine Designs
