How to Make Cake Pops

Over the holidays I've been working on perfecting the cake ball/pop.  After tons of trial and error and screaming way too many curse words, I've finally gotten it figured out!

My favorite flavor is red velvet with cream cheese frosting dipped in chocolate.  Remember, you can use any combination that you want, but this is definitely the favorite at my house.

Ingredients
Red Velvet Cake Mix
Cream Cheese Frosting
Chocolate Candi Quik {melting chocolate sold in the baking aisle}

Directions
Cook cake using the directions on the box - let cool in the fridge {about 30 mins - 1 hour}

Once cool, crumble cake into a large bowl and mix with 1/2 can of frosting {alot of recipes say to use an entire can, but I've found that makes them too mushy}  I've also found it's much easier just to use your hands to mix it up

This is what the cake should look like once mixed with the frosting:

Use a cookie scoop to form balls {makes approximately 24 balls}

Put in freezer for about an hour

Melt all of the chocolate in a bowl along with 1/2 tbsp of vegetable oil.  Heat for 45 seconds, stir then 15 seconds, stir until all chocolate is completely melted

If you're making cake pops, dip the lollipop stick into the chocolate before inserting into the cake ball, this will hold it on the stick.  Dip entire cake pop into chocolate and shake off excess.

If you're going to add sprinkles, add them immediately because this chocolate dries really fast!

I have a cake pop stand, but if you don't you can use the green floral styrofoam and stick the lollipop sticks into it to hold up the cake pops.

Have you ever made cake balls?

  9. I have made these for years, but I hate using that kind of candy coating. The Wilton wafers are easier to melt and come in a variety of flavors- I especially like the dark chocolate, but I also match the coating to the flavors- I make strawberry, lemon, orange, coconut, red velvet, dark fudge, vanilla, birthday cake, carrot cake, pumpkin- the list is endless!!

  10. I bought some from a neighbor and they tasted like the potpourri she uses for her home..didn't like them..so I am hesitant about making or purchasing cake pops.
